North Walsham & Dilham Canal

norfolkforestryclu

July 2023 saw us visit the North Walsham and Dilham Canal. The weather was kind to us and under the guidance of Terry Wiloughby of the trust we all had an enjoyable and informative evening. We met in the car park by Ebridge Mill where we were shown round the lock which is still awaiting it’s second set of gates and the re-built overflow bypassing it.

On the other side of the canal we saw the maintenance barge complete with digger arm used for dredging the canal which was on dry land for work to be done on it. We then drove to the car park at the now disused Honing railway station where we viewed a lock that was in dire need of a complete rebuild.

Moving on again, we arrived at a long abandoned staithe where wooden barrels were once loaded onto barges for transport to Gt Yarmouth. At this site there is also a well preserved, old railway bridge, which now takes the Weavers Way walk over the canal.

It was then back to the cars and return to Ebridge where we thanked Terry and handed over a collection from the members along with a donation from the club itself.
